Mohammed Ba Dughaish's Summer Lab Work

"My name is Mohammed Ba Dughaish, and I am a third-year PhD candidate in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Toronto. My academic interests center on sustainable materials design, particularly the development of bio-based porous materials that can replace petroleum-derived counterparts in high-performance engineering applications. I am especially drawn to the intersection of materials chemistry and functional performance, where fundamental structure-property relationships translate directly into real-world impact.

This summer, my work has centered on the synthesis and characterization of bio-based aerogels for thermal insulation and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding applications. My days are split between three core activities: conducting hands-on laboratory work to fabricate and characterize aerogels, reading some literature and presenting my research progress at seminars.

This project has meaningful impact because it addresses two pressing needs simultaneously: reducing reliance on synthetic, non-biodegradable insulation materials and enabling lightweight EMI shielding for electronics as devices become more compact and interference-prone. Successfully engineering bio-based aerogels with tunable pore structures could offer a scalable, sustainable alternative for industries ranging from construction to consumer electronics."
