Ayman Saeed's Automated System Work with the City of Edmonton

"My name is Ayman Saeed, and I am a Master of Science (MSc) student in Civil Engineering at the University of Alberta and a passionate debater. I completed my Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Construction Engineering at the American University in Cairo (AUC) a year ago and began my MSc, specializing in Transportation Engineering, at the University of Alberta in early 2026.

Working directly with the City of Edmonton (CoE), I aim to develop fully automated solutions to emerging challenges in curbside management by leveraging state-of-the-art computer vision algorithms, vision-language models (VLMs), and large language models (LLMs). Through this work, I seek to explore how advanced AI technologies can support more efficient and data-driven approaches to managing urban transportation infrastructure.

In addition to my work with the CoE, my master’s thesis focuses on the automated detection, geolocation, and assessment of pavement distresses using a mobile mapping system developed as part of my research. The project aims to create an end-to-end pavement inspection framework that utilizes low-cost, vehicle-mounted sensors to collect roadway data, automatically identify and quantify pavement distresses, accurately geolocate detected defects, and recommend appropriate maintenance actions. Ultimately, the system is designed to generate comprehensive, actionable pavement condition reports that can support more efficient infrastructure maintenance and decision-making.

During the first half of this summer, I had the opportunity to work in the lab, where I focused primarily on conducting a literature review, calibrating research equipment, and preparing for the next stages of my research. During the second half of the summer, I travelled back to Egypt, where I spent quality time with my family and friends while enjoying the vibrant life and atmosphere of Egypt."
